Des Moines may not be known for their steakhouses but there are plenty to choose from when you want to have a steak to either celebrate a birthday or just celebrate you got through a terrible work week. The following are the best locally owned choices in and around Des Moines.

  1. Jesse’s Emberslocated on Ingersoll Avenue, Jesse’s is a smaller steakhouse but their food is old school at it’s finest. They go out of their way to use the finest ingredients and you can really taste the freshness in all of their dishes. The staff is very friendly and you can tell they don’t have a lot of turnaround since they all have an easy rapport with each other and are very knowledgeable of the menu.  The fact that they’re reasonably price only adds to their charm and encourages many future visits.

  2. Trostel’s Greenbriarlocated on Merle Hay Road in Johnston, Trostel’s is the place to take someone you want to impress with their white table linens and the beautiful flowers they put on every table.  Their chef was named “Chef of the Year” in 2003 by the Iowa Restaurant Association so you know your steak is going to come out perfectly to order.

  3. Christopher’slocated on Beaver Avenue, Christopher’s has excellent Italian food but their steaks really stand out if you’re wanting to get something special. Their steak de burgo is served with a garlic butter cream sauce and is seasoned perfectly so the meat isn’t overpowered by either but really add to the steak.  The atmosphere is casual but still feels like you’re having an upscale meal.

  4. Big Steerlocated on Adventureland Drive in Altoona, the Big Steer is a family friendly steakhouse that’s good to take your grandparents or parents to for consistently well prepared steak. Their ribeye is one of the best in Des Moines. It’s a casual environment and they’ll treat you like family. Be sure to save room for their salted caramel cookie with ice cream served in a mini cast iron skillet.

  5. Rube’slocated on Ute Avenue in Waukee, Rube’s was founded at their Montour location which is well worth the drive but their Waukee location is just as good for those wanting to stay closer to home. This is one of the few “grill your own steaks” restaurants for those who’d rather cook their own meat. They have a huge selection of steaks to choose from and they have a meat retail outlet so you can cook your Rube’s steaks at home.

  6. John & Nick’s Steak located on Hickman in Clive, you probably know of John & Nick’s from their cute commercials. Cityview awarded them the “Best Steakhouse” award in 2014.   The black peppercorn crusted ribeye steak is a standout but any of the steaks on their menu are a good choice. They have an excellent salad bar with fresh ingredients and a homemade ranch dressing that is to die for.

  7. Chicago Speakeasy located on Euclid Avenue on the East side of Des Moines, Chicago Speakeasy lives up to it’s name with the speakeasy theme throughout their menu. They have some of the best Prime Rib in town and it’s a special on Monday so be sure to stop by on Monday nights to get a deal on it. They, like John & Nick’s, have a salad bar that may not be as extensive as John & Nicks, it’s still full of wonderful choices of freshly made salads.

  8. Irina’slocated on Rocklyn Drive in Urbandale, Irina’s specializes in Russian-American food so you’ll be able to find authentic Russian specialties as well as Iowa favorites such as Bone In Pork Chop with caramelized apples and Iowa Duck breast served with Russian potatoes.  I loved the Salmon Wellington I ordered served with spinach and goat cheese wrapped in a puff pastry dough.

  9. Iowa Beef Steakhouselocated on East Euclid Avenue, Iowa Beef is another “grill your own steak” restaurant like Rube’s. Their restaurant isn’t fancy so if you’re wanting a more down to Earth steakhouse, this is a good place to go. They’re reasonably priced and the steaks come with a baked potato and their salad bar. I loved the Texas Toast you can grill yourself especially as you’re waiting for the steaks to grill.

  10. Winn’s Pizza & Steakhouselocated in Norwalk and Indianola, Winn’s is a family owned steakhouse who serves only USDA choice cuts of meat. The marinated filet steak is a bargain at $13.99 and comes with a choice of potato and salad bar. Thursdays have a Top Sirloin special that makes having to get through one more work day a little more tolerable.
